What is STOA: A New Musical Journey about?
STOA is a new children’s musical that follows STOA, an older black bear and the forest’s den mother. She teaches young animals the wisdom of the trees and the soul songs gifted by Mother Tree.
When STOA becomes a mother herself, she discovers she must learn as much as she teaches — about love, friendship, and the strength of community.
Who is STOA for?
The musical is designed for children, parents, grandparents, caregivers and educators. STOA is truly a family-friendly and heartwarming experience that blends story, music, and imagination in a way that resonates across generations.
Who created STOA?
STOA was written and composed by Alivia Tagliaferri, an author, filmmaker, and mother, whose past works include novels, documentaries, and creative storytelling projects.
The show is directed and produced by Jared Whitford, an experienced theatre professional, and features music direction by Sarah Decker Keeley, a talented musician, teacher, and music therapist.
Sarah also helped compose some of the songs, including the beautiful ballad, “Tree Talk.”
What themes does STOA explore?
The musical celebrates themes of love, nature, friendship, community and resilience. At its heart, it’s a story about motherhood in its many forms.
When and Where will STOA premiere?
STOA: A New Musical Journey will premiere at Lycoming College’s Clarke Chapel in Williamsport from January 9–18, 2026.
